More Jewelry Prototypes!


Yet another of my jewelry prototypes. I’m really fond of this design. Its just….elegant. The process of carving, sanding and finishing this design is extremely time consuming. With 2 different iterations breaking in the carving process, I’m going to have to rework it to strengthen the sides and thicken certain portions of the wood.

But this design has legs.

I’ll need to pick a different colored glass. As much as I love the rippled green stained glass, it doesn’t read. When held up to light, the green glass just glows with rich viridian hues. But they aren’t going to be worn in front of a window, but snug against the skin. Without a bright lighting source behind them they read as black or dark, dark green. I’m probably going to need to switch to an opaque color.

The tools necessary for the intricate work of carving jewelry is very different from those I use on larger scale pieces. I have to put together custom vises, micro chisels and use the most delicate drills on my Dremel to put these pieces together.

Months and months of concept design work, carving, cutting, sanding and grinding have finally produced my first (albeit imperfect) prototype pendant necklace! Roughly 3 inches in length and an inch and half wide and carved from walnut, this design is a simplification of the Rose Window design.

As a proof of concept….it works. Its made of 3 layers of laser cut thin stock hardwood: a front, a spacer, and a backing layer. The front (seen in the photo above) is hand carved with chisels, files and carving knives and sanded until it has the proper depth and flow. The spacer holds a custom ground medallion of stained glass. The backing holds the glass medallion in place.

So far, so good! More pictures to come. I’m just thrilled that this idea I’ve been working on for so long actually works. You never actually know until you can touch it with your own hands!



Research in Mexico!

I’ve been told that creativity is like breathing. When you design, invent and work your craft, you’re exhaling. And when you surround yourself with beauty, with inspiration, with the new and unusual, you’re inhaling.

Well I just took one hell of a deep breath in Mexico! I’ve shown up in the lovely town of Merida just in time for a their Festival of Lights! More than 20 individual light sculptures that range from elaborate digital projections on the face of cathedrals to monuments of sound, light and fog that look like dubstep and the girl from the Ring had a very eerie baby.

When daylight is shining the town is a walkable marvel of stunning architecture, amazing food, and proximity to one of the great wonders of the world: Chichen Itza! I’ve been devouring the sights, sketching and coming up with at least half a dozen new design ideas. Not to mention contemplating maybe opening up a studio here.

LED Ropelights

LED Rim Lighting

I’m finally experimenting with LED ropelighting kits to place along the perimeter of our pieces. The upside is these pieces no longer need to be set on a window in order to take full advantage of the translucent effects of the stained glass. They can be mounted on walls and glow internally with illumination that can be adjusted in intensity. Several of the ropelight kits we’ve tried have included remote controls or allow the color of the light to be changed. The lone downside is cord.

The upside? Some kits we’re playing with are Alexa compatible! So in the near future you may be able to cause your beautiful wood and stained glass sculpture to glow with nothing more than you’re voice.

Finished Olive Tree

Months of concept designing, prototyping, custom laser cutting, hand carving, and mountains of sand paper later…..the Olive Tree has finally come together. The tree and branches form the centerpiece of the largest component of the 9 piece commission. The trunk is to be lacquered while the leaves will be individually painted.

The trunk was stained, sanded, stained again, sanded again in repeated, iterative layers. The final results are what I was hoping for. This was a tremendous amount of work. And to be honest…..I kinda underbid. But I think the client is really going to be happy with the final design.

Grand Bazaar Seal

This intricate piece of design work is an iteration of the Great Seal over the North Entrance to the Grand Bazaar in Instanbul! The insane level of detail that went into the piece was downright carpal tunnel inducing. It was finished with flat green paint as the background and a high density golden metallic paint for the raised finish.


A new commission!

Chichen Itza

A recent commission has given me the opportunity to explore recreating the organic undulations of ancient trees. Created with layers of laser cut and then hand tooled poplar, this is my first attempt at an olive tree. With the final installation being 4′ by 8′, I’m getting to experiment on a scale I rarely get to work with.

This tree will eventually become one of 9 separate pieces that can be broken down for shipping and reassembled at the installation site.



Initial Octopus Concept Sketch


The initial sketch of an octopus design is finally finished. And it still needs quite a bit of work. While I like the overall composition, the tenticales still need refinement. I imagine the piece on a piece of rippled orange stained glass, or perhaps on a bed of aqua blue flattened marbles. This is a design done for the simple love of the elegant, flowing lines of the piece. I don’t have a particular client, genre or motif in mind.


A Fun Side Project

It can’t all be epic castles, proud dragons and stately oaks! This piece is a lark for a lively 5 year old who is about to turn 6. As concepted, its approximately 4 layers, with a 3″ disk of stained glass at its center. The blue accents at the bottom are flat glass marbles to be inset into the wood. When the piece is finished, we’ll be sure to post a few pictures!
